Disney and LucasFilm have released the first official teaser trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens as part of the Thanksgiving holiday fun. The 90-second trailer doesn’t reveal much, but gives some subtle clues about what to expect from the next chapter of the saga.

Stormtroopers are returning. In the Expanded Universe, the Empire never really went away and while Disney and LucasFilm have deemed all that stuff legends, it makes sense that Stormtroopers — and possibly the Empire — will have a presence in this film.

Droids love soccer? One of the new droids looked like an R2-D2 baby in the face but it’s body looked like a soccer ball. Across all stories in the Star Wars saga (Prequels, Clone Wars and Originals), the different takes on various droids has been fun to see.

The Millennium Falcon and TIE Fighters seem to be in a dog fight of sorts. That will just be awesome.

Lightsabers. The villain appears in the trailer from behind, activating his lightsaber. At first, it looks bad ass. Then, it gets more goofy than the Inquisitor’s on Star Wars: Rebels. Upon activation, two smaller blades appear from the sides of the main blade. What possible use could that have in a duel? Wouldn’t the user, despite being Force capable, risk hurting himself? It may be too early to be critical until we either see more teasers or the movie itself, but that strikes me as a poor design.

The movie is due out December 2o15, so more trailers and information is likely to leak about the movie between now and then. But for now, Star Wars fans will be foaming at the mouth and watching this short teaser for hours on end.

(I may have already watched it a dozen times before even writing this short article!)
