How to Train Your Dragon 2 may have already been in theaters awhile here in the US, but it’s still making the rounds internationally, and the reception could not be better.

The Dreamworks animated feature opened in China last week to a whopping $5.6 million on its first day, which puts it past the $500 million mark in the global market.

To top it off, Dragon 2 is now the highest-grossing animated film of the year, as well as one of the top grossing films of the year of any genre. It was already one of the best-reviewed films of the year before such a major opening.

Domestically, How to Train Your Dragon 2 has already grossed over $170.6 million – that is as of last Thursday. In international markets, including China, the film grossed over $331.2 million.

Needless to say, these numbers have top executives at DreamWorks and studio 20th Century Fox very excited.

Chief Marketing Officer for Dreamworks Dawn Taubin said, “We have been incredibly proud of How to Train Your Dragon 2 from the moment we saw it and we’re thrilled that it has been embraced around the world with such enthusiasm.”

She added, “This film is not only an artistic and technical achievement for DreamWorks, but its strength at the global box office proves that audiences are embracing it as one of the most entertaining films of the year.”

DreamWorks is renowned for its CGI animated films and TV specials, but creates live entertainment properties too – all meant for worldwide audiences. The company prides itself on its leadership, cutting-edge techniques and technology, and its class of talent. They can boast being one of Fortune Magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For for five straight years.

Chris Aronson, President Domestic Theatrical Distribution at 20th Century Fox shared his thoughts. “This is a tremendous result for such a deserving, critically acclaimed film,” he said, adding he looked forward “greater box office heights.”

20th Century Fox, one of the largest producers/distributors of motion pictures in the world, acquires and distributes globally through various studio arms – including Fox Searchlight, Fox 2000, and Fox Animation/Blue Sky Studios.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 isn’t finished yet; the film opened in Italy last weekend.
