Bullying in school is finally being taken seriously with a new understanding of its long-term effects, although solutions to this problem are still hard to come by.  The effects of bullying can cause life-long damage, and schools are now working to develop comprehensive approaches.

While solutions to bullying are still being worked out, there are students who are still suffering and parents who have enough reason to still worry about the well-being of their children.

To those dealing with a bullying situation, someone who has dealt with a similar situation first-hand can offer a refreshing take on how to handle the problems that bullying arises.  Gilbert Ohanian’s new book “Chestnuts: A True Story About Being Bullied” offers insights into bullying that parents and teachers alike can’t afford to ignore.

When children are being bullied, often times they are too afraid or upset to fully explain the  situation, which makes solving the problem that much more difficult.  “Chestnuts” allows for parents to see the act of bullying from a child’s perspective, but with a more mature insight and reflection.

The act of bullying has become more intense and vicious over time, especially with social media being used as a new weapon to terrorize children from afar.  Parents needs to have a handle on the dynamics of bullying before it happens to their children.

The main question that parents want answered  is why some children bully others.  Sure, all children are going to have disagreements with one another or act with unnecessary cruelty or aggression, but those individual acts are all part of learning to get along.

Bullying, on the other hand, consists of running campaigns of intimidation, ridicule and terror targeting specific children.  It is not something that all or even most children do.

Ohanian sets out to answer questions about bullying in “Chestnuts.”  What makes some children bully others?  Why are some children particularly vulnerable to being bullied?  What can children who are being bullied do to avoid being targeted?  Most importantly, how can parents and teachers really help?

“Chestnuts: A True Story About Being Bullied” examines the author’s own personal experience as a bullied child.  Ohanian gained enormous insight from his experience and in “Chestnuts” he offers insight not only into children who have been bullied but also those who bully others.

To tackle the increasingly serious problem of bullying, parents, teachers and other professionals who work with children need to develop greater insight, while also realizing that children are often times too close to the experience to see bullying clearly and too immature to understand all of its dynamics.  Ohanian is here to help with that.

“Chestnuts: A True Story About Being Bullied” by Gilbert Ohanian is available in both print and Kindle versions.
