The organizers of the San Diego Comic-Con, to be held July 24-27, have announced a newly redesigned companion app.

Developed in partnership with NBC Universal, the app will allow attendees to view an interactive map of the exhibit hall at the San Diego Convention Center. Users can also view a live updated schedule of events and add them to their calendars.

For those following the convention from the comfort of their own couch, the app features a discovery tab with information on happenings in and around the show as well as exclusive items from the Comic-Con website. The app also has a section for news coming out of the show which can be discussed on Facebook and Twitter.

Held for the first time in 1970, Comic-Con was originally conceived as a celebration of comic book culture. The event has since grown to include video games, movies, television and anime. The four-day conference includes a wide variety of programs and panels attracting celebrities from all forms of entertainment. It has inspired the organization of similar events in major cities across the nation and worldwide.

Len Fogge, NBC Entertainment’s president of marketing and digital, is very excited about the launch of the app.

“The app is the perfect way to reach a very importance audience, and we hope attendees will find the new features helpful as they plan and attend Comic-Con,” he said.

The free Comic-Con app is available from the App Store for iPhones and iPads running iOS 6.0 or higher. Android users running version 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) or higher can pick it up from Google Play.
